Student needs to be familiar with linear algebra, derivation of functions of many variables, Einstein convention, surface and volume integrals, basic of ordinary and partial differential equations.
In the beginning of the course some hours will be spent to check that prerequisites are known and possibly to schedule tutoring activities to upgrade knowledge.

Obiettivi formativi

The aim of the course is to provide students with techniques used for modelling fundamental physics, in particular for gravitational and gauge theories. The notation and methods introduced will be useful also for more general mathematical models, in geometry and analysis. They in fact define in the most general sense the notion of invariance.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

At the end of the course the student should show to be able to understand symmetry and invariance assumptions and implement a mathematical model for physics, geometry and analysis. The student should be able to mathematically model the properties of gravitational or gauge fields, stressing their independence on conventions and obtaining classical (non-quantum) properties from their Lagrangian formulation.

Finally the student should be able to analyse a research paper, identify its main aspects and report them clearly and concisely.

The course is made of 48 hours of lectures.

Attending is not mandatory.
During the course tutoring activities will be organised to deal with prerequisites or to solve exercises.

During the course a list of exercises will be proposed about the topics discussed. Those exercises have to be solved by students during their studies.

The final exam consists of the discussion of the solutions of the exercises and of a seminar to present a paper about the topics discussed during lectures and concerted at the end of the course.
Students should show to be able to organise material in a concise, clear way and present it correctly.

In the beginning of the course participants and instructor will discuss the need of organizing additional tutorial classes to help participants to meet the required prerequisites.
